What I Love About Vienna

VIENNA!! I was so excited to finally be in Vienna, I have a good friend of mine who I haven’t seen in a year and I couldn’t wait to catch up with him. Prior to arriving in Vienna, we stopped in Linz because we read about the Electronica museum but unfortunately we went all the way there and it was closed, so we went back to Vienna to find our hostel.

We stayed at Hostel Ruthensteiner which was this hip, young modern feel to it. It was extremely close to train station which was a plus because we were exhausted and didn’t want to walk far to find our hostel. Also it was very close to the underground too which made it easier to get around Vienna.

I probably should mention that I have a bit of a morbid side to me, I mean I do study forensic psychology so anything somewhat related, I’m down. So now that’s out of the way, I found a Pathological Anatomical Museum. Righttt?! So up my alley! Anyway, its also known as the Tower of Fools. It is a round building from 1784 during the reign of the monarch Emperor Josef II. It was one of the first mental institutions and was one until 1866.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t take photos of the cool things inside, so you’ll have to go visit to find out!

To keep the psychology theme going, and of course go see the Sigmund Freud Museum.

The next day I knew that the St. Stephan’s Church had quite a catacomb and I’ve been dying to see it. No pun intended. The church is massive! It was a typical european church with its gothic like style and numerous colored windows.

I had arrived early for the next catacomb tour, so I had some time to walk around the city and I bumped into a few street performers.

I really loved Vienna, we did not intend on spending that much time there but when I was walking around, I could actually picture myself living there one day. The main square was gorgeous.

Its catacomb time!! I was so pumped to see this because it was one of the big ones and it was the people who died during the bubonic plague. The photo on the left, I got yelled at for taking but I should have turned of the click sound, DUH! Coffins and big urns were right on the sides of the walls. One of the urns were the ashes of The Hamburgs, the famous royal family. It wasn’t the entire body, just the organs. I wish I had the name of the tour guide because he was great, I don’t know who was more excited about the catacomb, me or him.

The next day was sightseeing. We went to check out the parliament buildings and museum quarters to have lunch. It was a beautiful day to just walk around and sightsee.

That night it was the music and film festival. They had a huge screen in front of town hall, they played the nutcracker.

The aroma from the food vendors was overwhelming. . .good. Unfortunately a huge thunderstorm rolled in and everyone was stuck under the tents and they stopped playing the film. But that didn’t stop anyone from having a good time, we got some food and had a beer and enjoyed ourselves until the storm cleared.

And our visit to Vienna has come to an end, after the film festival we went back to our hostel because we had to be up early to catch our overnight train to Switzerland which will take us about 9-10hrs.
